This blog is just a grab bag of thoughts and useful links. However, as the name suggests it may be interpreted by some as a wee bit challenging, if not, activist. Hence the use of the term "Left" in the title.

Summer Photos 2012 to 2023
(This article is long. Consisting of 41 photos and text. If it is not displaying fully click the article title or click here.)
Note: In order to incorporate all the photographic information, some of the behind-the-scenes code needed to be edited directly. In other words a human was involved in the formatting of this post, namely myself and there may be errors.
If you find any, please report them via the "Contact Us" form on every page.
When I came up with this idea a few weeks ago, it sounded so straightforward; find some of my favourite pictures from the last 10 or 11 years and created a slideshow. Sounds simple right? Well the devil's in the details and it's a good thing I love details 😀. Because then I thought, "Why not allow everyone to download the original photographs.", and that thought led to, "I wonder if there's a way to export all the photo information?"
Well, the answer to all of the above was "Yes". The only question was how much time I had to put in to this little endeavour. But it was too late, I had started a plan and 41 photographs later, combined with some old-school trickery to extract the information from the JPEG files, I had the beginnings.
The video had its own ups and downs. I of course decided to do the whole thing in 4K. Meaning the 13 minute video took over 2 hours to render. and I had to do it several times for various technical reasons.
All in all, it's about 35 hours worth of work. But it was worth it. I will add some comments to the photographs I remember details. Some are in the lower mainland of BC and others are taken from a trip to Trail British Columbia in about 2012. While others come from roaming around Vancouver and Surrey.
Better pictures for you...
"Blogger", the website host, tends to re-compresses any photo uploaded to it and there is a loss of quality, you will note that each picture has a filename below. Clicking on the file name will download the highest resolution photograph I have on my Google Drive. You are welcome to use them in whatever way you wish with no attribution necessary. I hereby place all of the photos in this post in the public domain.
I have adjusted some of the photos in the video version to make it work visually better. The downloaded versions are untouched and were created using the two cameras from Canon. Namely the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III for the newer photographs and the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS for the older images. (These links will lead you to the "Canon camera Museum")
The Video: Summer Photos from 2012 to 2023
So first, here is the 13 minute video which is basically a slideshow. and again it is yours to do with as you wish with no strings attached.
You can watch it below, or you can download the file directly from hereto have your own copy, but be aware of a few things if choosing to download the file itself:
This is the original large video source file. It is 2.73 GB in size, meaning that it will take a while to download.
Unlike playing in through the YouTube window below, which automatically adjusts, to your devices capabilities this is a 4K video. Meaning that it may not play on all devices.
It may be necessary on some devices to right click, or tap and hold, the above download link in order to actually get the file to download rather than play.
The Original Individual Untouched Photos
To download any of the following pictures in their full resolution, click on their filename.

These are just some flowers from the back patio at my residence. One of the tenants has a real green thumb and getting things to grow is their speciality. Not much of a back story to the photo except that I found it very pleasing.
This photo was taken a moment after, as you can see from the information below. The reasons for taking this particular image for exactly the same as the previous one. I just found that it looks nice. Although I must admit I find the soft background most appealing when contrasted with the foreground.
One of the things I like to do is get off at a random public transit station. In this case I think it was Royal Oak sky train station. I just remember there was a nice hill and I couldn't resist going up it. Anyway as things got progressively more steep I ran across this rosebush in someone's yard. And somehow I found the roses just astounding. So there we have it.
What caught me about this photo was the contrast between shadow and direct sunlight on the flower petals. The camera I currently use is capable of taking what are known as "Raw Photos". This captures exactly what the image sensor in the camera sees. There is no processing. As a result you get an image that more closely resembles true physical film. The downside is these files are large and there is no adjusting of the camera lens optics. In contrast JPEG which is probably the world's most common format of photo file reduces the file size by reducing the number and range of colour in the photo. But even in this JPEG photo you can see the contrast. Let me know if you would like to have the Raw version. But you may need some software to properly view it. Leave a note in the comments.
This photograph was just straightforward lovely to behold. There are probably going to be a few photographs in this post which I will make available as "Displates". This is a company that prints photography and artwork on metal. It'll most likely have to be a photograph from my Canon Power shot G7 as they have fairly stringent rules in order to be accepted for printing. I will post an update to the site when and if new photos printed in this format become available.
This photo grew on me. At first it was one of the many just didn't do much. Then when I was putting together the video I included it in a pan-shot. That is the image starts in a corner and grows from there. Somehow, that gave it new life.
Again, this is from the Freedom Place patio and it is one of those photos that grows on you. No pun intended :-). In the video it's another "pan-shot". If it does something for you, that's great.
This takes me back to my childhood. Buttercups anyone? If I remember correctly, this is in the nearby park. Sometimes the mother nature is an exquisite artist.
The facility I live in, Freedom Place, was planning to go on a picnic and as anyone who knows me, they know I like to go on my own. So my wheelchair and I wanted to see if it was possible to get to Queen's Park in new Westminster from Guildford and 148 using only the electric chair and the sky train. The answer is yes 😀. I caught this wall of roses on my way back. It was a beautiful sunny day. Need I say more?
I live in Surrey British Columbia, and you don't have to go very far for things to get a little bit wild. Literally five blocks away from me, you can be in a forest and in this case going down 100 Street, there you are. This is simply a close-up of some fantastic bush.
Oh, I remember this one. I had gone on a walk during one weekend and had gotten lost. But that is the thing I like. A little bit of uncertainty. Not huge amounts but enough. Anyway as I emerged out of a wooded area quite a ways from home, at least as far as someone an electric wheelchair can travel, I came upon this and couldn't grab my camera fast enough.
This is one of the ministry photos. I know I took it, but I can't remember the context. Because there are so many parks in Surrey and the lower mainland in general, I could have been anywhere.
This one is smack dab in the middle of East Broadway Vancouver, near Kingsgate Mall. A church that is been there for many years always has this great little garden. I will have to go through my collection to see photos from way back. If I find anything, it will be added here to this post.
Not too far away from King George, travelling up 104 there is a house, or used to be, with these marvellous tulips. By now it's probably obvious I never go anywhere without a camera. And I'm sorry it's not a smart phone camera. It's the real thing. I'm a nerd from way back. :-)
Green Timbers Park may be… I boosted the colour in the YouTube video, but still this un-tweaked version just says something so nice. "Nice" can often be simple.
Okay this time I have no clue. This one just strikes a chord with me and there is absolutely no reason for it to do such a thing. Maybe it's just because it's so natural.claims come on in
This photo is one of my favourites, taken in Vancouver near Laurel Street and W. 7th Ave. with my old trusty Canon PowerShot SX120. This tree was absolutely erupting with beautiful colour. It is actually my desktop wallpaper on my main computer. (I had this camera for many years and took over 87,000 photographs.)
While I don't remember where I was when I took this photo, I do remember why the image was captured. It was the wild imperfection. The picture was just there waiting to be taken. These roses had definitely seen better days and yet that's what made it work.
Quite a ways down on West Broadway in Vancouver, heading towards UBC (the University of British Columbia). With rush hour starting up and all the noises of the city, this rosebush was part of someone's patio.
When I lived in Nakusp British Columbia one did not have to go far to find large wild vacant areas. This photo is simply a close-up of some foliage. What caught me was the density of greens with the little flowers scattered throughout.
Another photo taken in Nakusp British Columbia. Just for its "wildness". This small village is literally loaded with all sorts of breathtaking scenery.
This one was taken, I believe, on the way to Trail British Columbia, my hometown. My family and I were on a bit of a road trip meandering through parts of British Columbia.
Now this photo was definitely taken in Nakusp British Columbia. Just after I arrived in the village. After living in Vancouver for so many years, the scenery just blew me away and of course it was the blue sky and mountain that caught my eye.
Some things are really hard to capture and a photograph and it was simply the wide open space relatively early of the August morning. This is in Nakusp British Columbia.
This is an iconic image for me. Taken in Castlegar British Columbia, not far away from my grandparents cottage. The site of this mountain only meant one thing for me as a child… "Summer!" Very few things remain constant in life but this was and is one of them. I was so glad to find when I was on a road trip with my family in 2013 that the "Old Mountain" was still there just as I remembered it.
This image was taken on the fly while we were travelling toward Nakusp British Columbia I believe. It is heavily altered, in this case I had to straighten it out. If you download the image you will get the original. Still it was such a beautiful shot that I had to include it.
I'm going to have to start keeping a journal, because I really don't remember the context of this particular shot. (Mental note to Patrick: Next camera get built in GPS.) But still this photograph resonates with me.
Once again in the middle of Vancouver, there was this photograph just begging to be taken. It astounds me how much beauty and variety there is even in the middle of the city. Just something about the bark of the tree and these gentle flowers… I don't know what it is but this is one of my favourite photographs.
Oh how I remember this one. When I was living in Vancouver I went everywhere with my three wheeled electric scooter. Aside from the sky train I would skip most public transit preferring to go on my own. One day I decided to try to go to Stanley Park starting from Laurel Avenue and West seventh. Well, I did it except that I added the Stanley Park seawall to the adventure and this is about halfway around the seawall. The up there and back using only a scooter. What fun it was. Now that I'm in an electric chair I'm still doing it. Only I start from Surrey and ride the sky train into Vancouver.😀
I really should do some research into botany, because I have no idea what this beautiful plant is. I do remember that it was taken on the "Land Bridge" crossing 6th Ave. in Vancouver near Laurel Street. Again it is simply amazing to me what is on this earth.
I was heading somewhere in Vancouver when this image caught my eye. Literally flowers exploding out of a tree trunk, and again, verily early in the year. Simply beautiful. The picture isn't the best but I simply had to be included it here
This picture I would love to blow up to a large poster if not frame it and put it on my wall. This was a real accident. I didn't mean to include the edges of the fence seen on the top and left. But it really helps frame the photo. I wish that I had a much higher resolution camera in 2012. I may try to get this printed in a large format but it's going to take some doing, as the photo is full of little distortions called artifacts. Nevertheless accidents can be beautiful!
This photo hasn't been retouched. The colours are real. I was crossing the street in Vancouver and this flower was part of a larger corner garden maintained by the city.
Down on East Broadway in Vancouver. Talk about plants living together! This was just as happy accident. What are the chances that two very different plants would intermingle in this way?
I had this photo blown up and on my living room wall in Vancouver. It was on W. 7th Ave. probably near Heather Street. It was the shadows on the brick then I noticed first but I had no idea how great it would look until we had it enlarged and mounted in a frame. Sadly, the original framed photograph was lost when I moved out of Vancouver. But I still have the original so who knows, I may get it redone.
One very hot afternoon on East Broadway. I remember because the heat was oppressive, and yet here was this rosebush, against the grey brickwork. I went into Vancouver about a month ago and the rosebush is still there. Much bigger and doing well.
It really is quite amazing what you can achieve even with a 10 megapixel camera in 2013. I can remember taking the photograph, I think I was on the north side of the Falls Creek seawall. Beyond that I am not sure, except to say I like this photograph.
Cherry blossoms anyone? That's obviously what caught my eye here. No idea where I was though. Another compelling argument for getting GPS on my next camera. :-)
It was the contrast of the grey wood of the fence and the white blooms that made this photo work for me. Again the JPEG file format doesn't do it justice. My camera takes two photos of each scene one in JPEG and another in a format known as "Raw" which is where it really comes out. Let me know in the comments if you would like the raw format file for any of these photos.
The "Sun Wheel" image comes from some video I took while wandering around earlier this summer. I then converted it to a GIF animation using "Corel Video Studio Pro Ultimate". The video was also produced using the same software. This is not an endorsement or opinion on the software. It is simply a software package I am very used to and for me it works well.
Unfortunately because this image was extracted from a video, no higher resolution is available beyond clicking on the image itself. Therefore it is not available for direct download.
Corel AfterShot Pro 3 was used to create the initial thumbnails and extract the photo information.
This has been one a heck of a post to put together. As always feel free to leave your comments and/or suggestions.
